Zermatt 4000m frenzy

07/10/2013

Back in August I had a brilliant trip to Zermatt and Saas with Aimee and Tim. We started the week with a quick half traverse of the Breithorn to blow off the cobwebs.

After that it was the long slog up to the Rothorn Hutte where we were joined by Italian Guide Marco Zaninetti for an ascent of the Zinalrothorn. This classic 4000m peak has a striking silhouette above Zermatt, but due to the technical nature wasn't busy. A little fresh snow on the route added some spice, as did a cold Northerly wind, but the whole group still made the summit. Celebrations were a little tame owing to fact that people realised how long the descent to Zermatt was ! There were certainly some tired teddies that night....

After a relaxing day rock climbing on the Riffelhorn we headed over to Saas Grund to tick off some 4,000m peaks there. Joined this time by aspirant guide Tania Noakes we had two great days on the North ridge of the Weismeiss and then the South ridge of the Lagginhorn. The weather then broke, and we took a couple of days off before moving to Chamonix. A traverse of the Entreves, and an ascent of the Tour Ronde followed. To finish the trip we made a rapid traverse of the Rocherfort Arete and Aiguille Rochefort, resulting in a very contented (and knackered!) Tim and Aimee.

Looking forward to the next time already....
