Late July - Mix and Match

18/09/2014

Late July saw me guiding James Gilbert from London for a week. James is a regular client, and so I was looking forward to getting onto some quality routes.

Unfortunately, those of you who were in the Alps late July will remember that the weather was pretty awful overall. We started well, with sunny weather allowing a great traverse of the Petite Charmoz in the Chamonix Aiguilles. Then followed a nice ascent of the Chapelle de la Gliere. This is a classic Chamonix rock route in the Aiguilles Rouges, and not to be missed.

The weather then turned very nasty and we drove South to the Queyras range on the border of France and Italy. The following day was cloudy and atmospheric, but it stayed dry and we made a traverse from Punta Udine to Punta Roma. This "short ridge" actually seemed quite long, but incredibly for this esoteric route, we were accompanied all the way by fellow British Guide Matt Stygal and his client. The route was great, but afterwards things looked to be getting wet so we drove back to Chamonix.

The next day was still wet in Chamonix so cragging in Italy on the multi pitch venue of Machaby was just the job. The following day it was dry again in Chamonix, so we opted for a mellow ascent of Mani Piluti in the Aiguilles Rouges, before heading into town for a well deserved lunch and a bottle of rose. Some times you have to take the rough with the smooth.
